Sewing Reveal: Modern Scrappy Baby Quilt & Link to Free Tutorial

Finished this somewhat modern scrappy baby quilt recently from a free tutorial I found via Pinterest (link below).  I even appliqued the baby's name on the back of the quilt - my first time to applique!  And the binding is actually stripes of all the fabrics used on the front.

The pattern itself was really fun, easy and customize-able so I highly recommend it. Check it out on Andie Johnson Sews.

And here is the back of the quilt...

The fabrics used on the front:
Garden Party Tango by Melissa Ybarra of Iza Pearl Design
Kona Cotton Iron Grey

Both the orange and the bird fabrics used on the back were found at JoAnn Fabric store.

Piecing this together with super fast thanks to the pre-cuts

So fun to play with the blocks as you sew them.

This was my first time to applique anything, so I tested out using Wonder Under's fusible webbing to get familiar with the process.  And decided to try out a few different stitches to see what I liked best for this blanket.
I ultimately used the lower left stitch  that sort of looks like old fashioned hand stitches (sorry, I forgot it's name).  And after washing the blanket a few times, the edges are holding up fine.

Love how the binding combines all the fabrics from the front into a really cool combination.  The stripes were created from 1.5" widths of fabric and sewed together creating an 18" x 15" piece of striped fabric.  Then I cut 2" strips at a 45* angle to create my binding.

You can find the tutorial here on A Quilter's Table blog.

The learning process to applique and how to make the striped binding for the first time ever slowed me down, next time I should probably only try one new technique at time if I want to keep my sewing mojo going.
